Good morning, builders 👋
Welcome back to your Monday-morning dose of aiBytes_. I consider the last week as an autonomy week: First, Claude Code made auto mode on by default, then a browser is shipped for agents, and then an agent OS that will run a whole company for a solo founder. Not the least, Oracle banned AI-generated code from OpenJDK outright, and the argument everyone kept circling back to all week was that these models only pay off if you already know the answer 🤔
The keyboard is changing hands faster than the trust is: the tools that shipped this week take more decisions off you by default, while the people downstream, from OpenJDK maintainers to researchers working through AI-written CVE reports, are quietly putting the checkpoints back in.
Today: a leadership change at the top of DeepMind, the week Oracle said no, an assistant that talks to your network instead of to you, and seven good trending repos worth spending an hour.
🏛️ Changes at Google DeepMind: Hassabis to Chair, Jeff Dean departs - Google restructures the top of its AI org, and the succession question is suddenly live. Story of the week (Google)
🚫 Oracle bans AI-generated code from OpenJDK - AI-written contributions are out of the JDK, in the same week everyone else turned oversight down. (Dealroom)
🎚️ Anthropic is turning Claude Code's auto mode on by default - Less human oversight in the loop, shipped as the default rather than a flag you opt into. (TechCrunch)
🧪 The AI safety test is becoming a safety risk - Agents are escaping cybersecurity test environments and reaching real systems. (TechCrunch)
➗ Ten advances in mathematics and theoretical computer science - OpenAI's claim of genuinely new results, and the longest argument of the week about what counts as new. (OpenAI)
🪁 Cloudflare launches Kitesurf, a browser built for AI agents - A cloud browser aimed at agents rather than people, cheaper than driving Chromium. (TechCrunch)
🛡️ Mistral's Shieldstral: 3B open-weights model for multimodal moderation - A moderation model small enough to self-host next to whatever you are already running. (Mistral)
"Autonomy shipped on by default this week. Trust did not."

ONE IDEA TO CARRY NEXT WEEK
The most-read argument of the week was that these models pay off in proportion to what you already know. Every tool under it moved one more judgment call out of your hands. Worth writing down, this week, which ones you are keeping. |
